Direct Costs (Appearing under the Student Accounts tile in OPUS):

The "Direct Cost Subtotal" above lists the charges that are billed through Emory’s Student Accounts and Billing Office and will appear under Charges Due from the Student Accounts tile in OPUS.

Emory Tuition:

Since the students who are participating in the program will be fully enrolled at Emory and receive Emory credit, they will be charged regular Emory tuition for participation in the program. You will receive a Charges Due email notification prompting you to log into OPUS for viewing amounts owed for the term from Emory's Office of Student Accounts and Billing during the normal billing cycle for the semester.

Indirect Costs (Estimated Additional Expenses):

The "non-billable subtotal" above lists the additional estimated expenses.

The following items are only estimates of additional expenses. These additional expenses could vary greatly depending on the individual student's spending habits, restaurant choices, personal shopping and additional travel plans.

  • Airfare: This is an estimated average cost for a round-trip flight from Atlanta to London. You will need to arrange and pay for your own air travel, departing from Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport for London. Your return flight from London can be to the city of your choice.
  • Books and/or Supplies: This is an estimated cost for academic materials for the semester.
  • Personal Expenses:This is an estimated amount for incidental or miscellaneous costs associated with daily life in London. This does not include personal travel and will vary based on individual spending habits.
  • Local Transportation: IES Abroad will provide each student with a local debit card pre-loaded in monthly increments, totaling £150 for the program duration. An additional £45 will be provided upon arrival for initial transportation costs, including the purchase of a Student Oyster Card. It is your responsibility to manage these funds for your monthly transportation needs.
  • Meals: For students receiving financial aid, the amount of aid may help cover some or all of the estimated cost of food. This will vary depending on each student’s individual financial situation and aid package. Students who are not receiving need-based financial aid will not be charged the standard semester food rate of $4,373, giving them the flexibility to use those funds toward their food expenses during the program.

All students, regardless of financial aid status, will have access to a shared food pantry. The pantry will include staple items such as pasta, rice, and other dry goods, as well as cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and other essential items to help maintain a clean and comfortable living environment.

We recommend that students budget approximately $30–$50 per day—or $2,940–$4,900 for the 14-week program—depending on personal preferences and eating habits. Food prices in London can be high, so preparing some meals at home using the fully equipped kitchen in your student housing is a smart, budget-friendly choice—and likely essential.

If you receive funding as part of your financial aid package, it's important to manage those funds carefully. Additional support will be very limited if your budget runs out early. With thoughtful planning and smart choices, you can enjoy a variety of meals while staying within your estimated budget. Consider honing your cooking skills over the summer to prepare!

Important Note on Cost of Living:

Please be aware that the cost of living in the United Kingdom is currently higher than in the United States due to the exchange rate between the British pound and the U.S. dollar. We encourage you to factor this into your budget.
