Resources for Parents

As your student embarks on the exciting journey of off-campus study, Oxford College recognizes the importance of your partnership in their success and safety. We want to assure you that your student's well-being is a paramount concern for us. We actively engage with our programs abroad, diligently monitor global safety information, and equip our students with the knowledge and resources they need to responsibly navigate their time away.

While uncertainties can exist in any environment, data suggests that studying abroad is statistically very safe. The Forum on Education Abroad, a respected authority in international education standards, has compiled extensive research indicating that the rate of critical incidents involving students abroad is lower than that for students on U.S. campuses.

Global Oxford (GO) proactively prepares students for their off-campus experiences. We believe that informed students and engaged families are crucial to a positive and secure study abroad journey. We are dedicated to providing you and your student with the vital resources and essential information needed for a successful academic experience.

As a parent/guardian you may be asking what you should be doing. How can you help?

  • Encourage your student to take ownership of the process, from completing paperwork to resolving minor issues independently while abroad. Be a guide, not a supervisor.
  • Co-create a communication plan, agreeing on preferred methods (like video calls or email) and frequency, keeping time differences in mind. Aim for balance; stay connected with scheduled weekly or bi-weekly calls but avoid constant contact which can impede their adjustment. Encourage them to fully engage with their new culture.
  • Talk with your student about your concerns and discuss ways in which they can mitigate any risk and practice behaviors that will increase their safety.
  • In preparation for any emergencies abroad, make certain your own passport is up to date. It should be valid for 6 months after the end date of the student’s program.
  • In case of any emergency, look for safety updates via email from Global Oxford. While it is important to stay informed through the news, direct communication with your student or Oxford College offers the clearest understanding of the situation on-site, avoiding potential media sensationalism.

More parent and family guidance will be provided throughout the summer onboarding series.
