Packing for London
How to Think About Packing for Your Semester Abroad
Preparing for a semester in London is exciting and can feel a bit overwhelming. The good news is: you don’t need to bring everything with you. London has all the essentials you might forget. This guide offers a philosophical approach to packing, helping you make thoughtful choices that fit your space and your semester abroad.
A detailed, item‑by‑item packing checklist will be provided in the London Essentials Canvas course later this summer. The guidance below is meant to help you get oriented and avoid overpacking.
Packing Philosophy: Pack Light & Pack Smart
Space in your room and your suitcase will be limited, so it’s best to think in terms of simplicity, flexibility, and essentials.
Students find that bringing fewer items makes moving in easier, sharing space smoother, and travel more manageable. Most items you may need (from toiletries to extra towels) are easy to find once you arrive in London.
Understanding Your Space: Shared Bedroom + Compact Kitchenette
All students will live in shared double rooms equipped with compact kitchenettes. Because rooms are shared, storage space is modest. Keeping your packing minimal will help you stay organized and comfortable in your new home.
Clothing for London’s Weather
London weather changes frequently. The key is layering, not bulk. Think:
- a waterproof jacket
- layers you can add or remove easily
- comfortable shoes for walking and commuting
There’s no need for a large wardrobe. Plus, you can always buy additional items once you arrive.
Electronics & Daily Essentials
Bring the essentials you use every day but avoid duplicates or extras.
A few reminders:
- UK outlets are different. Plan for adapters.
- Pack only the electronics you truly need.
- Don’t bring appliances (hair dryers, kettles, etc.). They’re bulky, voltage‑sensitive, and easy to buy locally.
Once on site, you can pick up small items like extension cords or desk lamps in local shops or online.
What NOT to Pack
To make your arrival smoother, avoid bringing:
- Bulky kitchen items such as cookware or large utensils
- Bedding or pillows (a linen set is provided – more information about this will be shared via Canvas)
- More clothing or shoes than you can comfortably store
- Specialty items “just in case”
- Anything heavy that could be purchased once in London
Remember: you’ll be sharing a room. Keeping your belongings streamlined helps everyone feel at home.
If You Forget Something, You Can Buy It in London
London has everything you might need and likely more than you expect. Students can easily find essentials at:
- Local grocery and pharmacy chains
- Affordable home‑goods shops
- Clothing and outdoor stores
- Amazon UK, which delivers quickly to the residence hall
Most students end up buying a few items during the first week. It’s completely normal and often easier to plan on picking up certain things once you’re settled.
